Homeschooling

I have taken a small break from my blogging activities to start getting things ready to homeschool my son. The decision has been made, it was almost made for me when I received an email from his teacher saying that he is behind and she was sending some things for him to catch up. This has turned into him going to school at 8 coming home at 3 and doing homework almost until he goes to bed at 8. I think his teacher is a wonderful lady, however she just has too many students to give one student one-on-one teaching. That is how my Buggy learns the best.

I decided that I am letting him finish the year, or as much of it as we can handle at this point. I have set up a better homework schedule, and we’re slowly getting out of doing so much in one night. Though with Wednesday night kids church that he goes to, and playdates on Thursdays the time is so limited.

A lot of people have already shown me a great deal of support, though there are the people who start it out with, “Are you insane?” Most of my family asked me that exact question, in fact. I honestly feel it is what’s best for my kid. I know at first it will be a struggle to fit everything in, to find a balance, and to create a good lesson plan. I am determined to do what I can to help him love learning and to do well.

We’re going to do year round schooling 4 days a week, 4 hours a day. I have been reading a lot about the scheduling and I think 4 weeks on 1 week off seems to be the most reasonable. Now trying to find where to put the whole month vacation is gonna be tough! Probably from Thanksgiving week to Christmas week that way the holiday madness doesn’t take over the quality study time.

Wish me luck! I’m sure we’ll need it. I’ll get back into the regular weekly blogging as soon as I can.

Do any of you homeschool? What were some things that you found to be difficult or easy? Things that surprised you?
